What Is Knitwear Manufacturing?

Knitting builds fabric from interlocking loops of yarn. Woven fabric, in contrast, crosses threads at right angles. That looped structure is what gives knitwear its stretch, softness and warmth.

A custom knitwear manufacturer works in two main ways. Flat knitting machines can knit panels, or even whole garments, to shape, which gives the neat, fully finished look of a good sweater. Circular machines knit tubes of fabric, which are then cut and sewn, or knit tubular items such as socks. The method affects fit, cost and finish, so we choose it for each product.

Knitwear We Make as a Custom Knitwear Manufacturer

Each product below has its own build, yarn choices and finishing needs. Here is what we make.

Beanies

Knit beanies are the entry point for most knitwear brands. They are small, quick to sample and easy to ship, and a jacquard or embroidered logo on a good beanie sells itself.

Options: Cuffed, slouchy, fisherman, ribbed and pom-pom styles; jacquard-knit logos, embroidery, woven labels and rubber or leather patches.

Best for: Streetwear, outdoor and team merchandise.

Knitted Balaclavas

A knitted balaclava covers the head, neck and face, so fit and breathability matter as much as warmth. We choose yarn and stitch to keep it soft against the skin and easy to breathe through.

Options: Full-face and three-hole styles, ribbed or plain knit, and jacquard or embroidered logos.

Best for: Winter sports, motorcycling, cold-weather workwear and streetwear.

Sweaters

Sweaters show off knitwear craft the most. Gauge, yarn and stitch structure decide whether a sweater feels premium or flimsy, and we help you choose all three.

Options: Crewneck, V-neck, turtleneck and mock neck; plain, cable, rib and jacquard patterns; oversized, regular and cropped fits.

Best for: Fashion, lifestyle, team wear and corporate collections.

Socks

Socks are knitted on specialised circular machines, with the pattern built into the knit itself. A custom sock can carry your logo all the way around, in colours that never wear off.

Options: Ankle, crew, tube and knee-high lengths; ribbed cuffs and cushioned soles; jacquard logos and patterns; cotton, nylon and elastane blends.

Best for: Streetwear, sports, gym and promotional ranges.

Knit Shorts

Knit shorts bring the comfort of knitwear to warm-weather collections. Stretch and recovery matter here, so we pick yarn and rib to keep the waist and hems in shape.

Options: Elasticated or drawstring waists, ribbed or plain knit, jacquard stripes and logo detailing.

Best for: Loungewear, streetwear and matching sets.

Knit Trousers

Knit trousers combine the comfort of joggers with the look of tailoring. They need a stable structure so they hold their line and do not bag at the knees.

Options: Straight, wide-leg and jogger shapes; ribbed cuffs; drawstring or elasticated waists; matching sets with sweaters or hoodies.

Best for: Premium loungewear, streetwear and co-ord sets.

Knit Hoodies

A knit hoodie looks and feels different from a standard fleece hoodie. The knitted structure gives more texture, more stretch and a softer, more premium handfeel.

Options: Pullover and zip styles; ribbed hems and cuffs; jacquard or embroidered logos; oversized and regular fits. See also our streetwear manufacturing.

Best for: Premium streetwear and lifestyle collections.

Knit Cardigans

Cardigans are layering pieces, so drape and finishing matter. Buttonholes, button bands and neckline edges need clean linking to look professional.

Options: Button, zip and open-front styles; shawl and V-neck collars; oversized and regular fits; ribbed bands and custom buttons.

Best for: Fashion, lifestyle and uniform collections.

Knit Vests

A knit vest is the easiest way to add a layer without adding sleeves. It works as a smart-casual piece and as a statement item in streetwear.

Options: V-neck and crew styles; plain, cable and jacquard patterns; button or zip fronts.

Best for: Smart-casual, golf, school and streetwear collections.

Gauge, Yarn and Stitch: What Decides the Feel

Three choices decide how a piece of knitwear looks and feels, and a good custom knitwear manufacturer will walk you through each one. Getting them right matters more than any decoration.

Gauge

Gauge is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. A lower gauge makes thicker, chunkier knit. A higher gauge makes finer, lighter knit.

GaugeResultTypical use
Low (about 3 to 5)Chunky, warm, heavyWinter sweaters, beanies, cardigans
Medium (about 7 to 9)Balanced weight and drapeSweaters, vests, hoodies
High (about 12 to 14)Fine, smooth, lightLightweight sweaters, base layers, fine cardigans

Yarn

YarnFeel and performanceWatch out for
CottonSoft, breathable, takes colour wellHeavier, can stretch and shrink
AcrylicSoft, light, affordable, holds colourLess breathable; can pill
Wool and merinoWarm, premium, naturally elasticHigher cost; coarser wool can itch
BlendsBalance cost, comfort and durabilityResult depends on the ratio

Stitch structure

  • Jersey. Smooth and flat, with a stretchy, lightweight feel.
  • Rib. Stretchy and snug, used for cuffs, hems, beanies and socks.
  • Cable and textured stitches. Raised patterns that add warmth and character.
  • Jacquard. Multi-colour patterns knitted into the fabric.
  • Intarsia. Solid blocks of colour for larger graphics.

Decorating Knitwear

Knitwear does not take printing as well as flat fabric, so a custom knitwear manufacturer usually builds decoration in or stitches it on.

  • Jacquard knitting. Logos and patterns knitted straight into the fabric. They cannot peel or fade.
  • Intarsia. Bold colour blocks, good for large, simple graphics.
  • Embroidery. Stitched logos and lettering on sweaters, beanies and cardigans.
  • Patches. Rubber patches, woven badges and leather patches. See our embossing and debossing page for leather.
  • Labels and tags. Woven neck labels, care labels and hang tags. See our custom clothing labels and hang tags.

Design Tips From a Custom Knitwear Manufacturer

  • Start with the yarn and gauge. They decide drape, warmth and price more than anything else.
  • Keep graphics simple. Knit is built from loops, so very fine details do not translate. Bold shapes work best.
  • Limit colours. Every extra colour in jacquard adds yarn and time.
  • Think about weight. Heavy knit stretches over time. Choose a structure that holds shape for the garment.
  • Send a reference. A garment, a swatch or a photo is the fastest way to explain the feel you want.
  • Plan sizes properly. Knit stretches, so measurements work differently from woven. See our custom sizing page.

How Our Custom Knitwear Process Works

  1. Send your brief. Product, yarn, gauge, colours, artwork, sizes and quantity. A reference garment or tech pack helps.
  2. Design check and mockup. We review the design for knitting and send a free mockup.
  3. Yarn and colour selection. We confirm yarn, colours and stitch structure against your references.
  4. Knitted sample. We knit a sample so you can check the feel, fit and colours.
  5. Adjustments and size set. We refine the sample, then make samples across your sizes.
  6. Bulk knitting and finishing. Production begins only after your sign-off. Pieces are knitted, linked or sewn, washed and finished.
  7. Quality control. See below.
  8. Packing and shipping. Pieces are packed with your labels and custom packaging and shipped worldwide.

For the full picture of an order, read our manufacturing process and sample policy.

Our Quality Control

Quality control is what protects your brand when you work with a custom knitwear manufacturer. Every order goes through our three-level QC system. For knitwear, the checks include:

  • Knit quality, with no dropped stitches, holes, streaks or uneven tension
  • Colour accuracy against your approved sample and yarn references
  • Measurements against your size chart, including after washing
  • Seams and finishing, with clean linking, even necklines and secure buttons or zips
  • Hand feel, so every piece matches the approved sample
  • Final inspection for stains, loose yarn ends and flaws before packing

Rejected pieces are removed, not shipped.

Caring for Knitwear

Knitwear lasts longest with gentle care. We recommend telling your customers to wash inside out on a gentle cycle or by hand, use a low spin, dry flat and avoid hanging heavy pieces, which can stretch them. We can add care instructions to your labels.

What Affects Custom Knitwear Cost

Every custom knitwear manufacturer prices a little differently. We quote per project, because the price depends on a few clear factors:

  • Yarn type and weight, since wool and merino cost more than acrylic and cotton
  • Gauge and garment size, because finer gauge and larger pieces take longer
  • Stitch complexity, including cable, jacquard and intarsia
  • Number of colours, including any custom-dyed yarn, which can have higher minimums
  • Decoration, labels and trims
  • Quantity, as sampling and setup costs are spread across more pieces

For more on pricing, see our price guide. We give a written quote before any work starts, so there are no surprise charges.

We work with clothing startups, streetwear and lifestyle labels, outdoor and winter brands, sports teams and schools, and companies ordering branded apparel. Frequently Asked Questions

What is your MOQ as a custom knitwear manufacturer?

Our MOQ is 30 pieces per design. Because each design needs sampling and machine setup, smaller runs cost more per piece, so we can advise on the most economical quantity for your budget.

What is the difference between flat knit and circular knit?

Flat knitting builds panels or whole garments to shape, which gives fully finished sweaters and cardigans. Circular knitting makes tubes of fabric or tubular items such as socks.

What is gauge in knitwear?

Gauge is the number of needles per inch on the machine. Low gauge gives chunky knit. High gauge gives fine, light knit.

Which yarn is best for my product?

It depends on the product and price. Cotton is breathable, acrylic is soft and affordable, and wool or merino is warm and premium. We recommend one after hearing how the garment will be used.

Can you knit my logo into the fabric?

Yes. Jacquard and intarsia knit your logo into the garment, so it cannot peel or fade. Embroidery and patches are other options.

Can you match my brand colours?

We match as closely as the yarn range allows, using your Pantone or colour references and an approved sample. Custom-dyed yarn gives the closest match but may need higher minimums.

Will knitwear shrink or stretch?

Some shrinkage is normal, especially with cotton and wool. We plan for it in the pattern and check measurements after washing.

Can you make matching sets, such as a hoodie and trousers?

Yes. Sets knitted from the same yarn and colour match perfectly, and we can sample them together.

Can I send my own blank garments to be decorated?

No. We are a manufacturer, so we decorate only garments we make for your order. That keeps quality consistent from the first piece to the last.

Can I get a sample before bulk production?

Yes. We knit a sample for you to approve. See our sample policy for details on cost and timing.

How long does production take?

It depends on the product, yarn and quantity. Share your design or reference and we will give you an exact turnaround, confirmed in writing before we start.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. As a custom knitwear manufacturer working with brands abroad, we ship worldwide and share shipping options and estimated delivery times before production begins.
